The National Cinema Museum inaugurates the new showcase dedicated to Mario Celso

Before  films were projected with digital technologies there was a long series of technical innovations which solved various projection related problems. One of the most famous was the so - called “flickering” effect which seems to make the images on screen flicker. Present from the very beginning of cinema, the flickering was almost completely eliminated in 1946 by the Italian inventor Mario Celso (S. Antonino of Susa, 1917 –1994) with the perfecting of the electromechanical rectifier, an instrument which “rectifies” the current using a brilliant system of contacts which change position when the current changes direction.

On March 7 1992 Mario Celso won the Academy award for Scientific and Technical achievement for the invention of the rectifier. The prestigious award was presented to him by Tom Hanks.

The National Museum of Cinema, in collaboration with the Celso family and the Irem corporation (Industria Raddrizzatori Elettromeccanici, Electromechanical Rectifier Industry), has therefore decided to dedicate one of its showcases to Mario Celso, which was inaugurated October 14, 2015. Alongside the photos and documents from the Academy awards ceremony in 1992, various models of Mario Celso’s inventions are exhibited, telling the story of its evolution: from the very first electromechanical rectifier dated 1946 to the electronic model for Xenon lamps used today, as well as the electromechanical version from the Ninties.
