To mark the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy, we present the restoration of Luchino Visconti’s masterpiece, based on the novel by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa. The Leopard made history with its sumptuous scenes, the scathing irony of some of its dialogue and its sophisticated colours, but it owes its success to ViscontiÂ’s extraordinary ability to describe an era of change and strong political convictions, where an old-fashioned sense of nostalgia clashes with the urgent necessities of the present.
