Interstellar adventures; extraterrestrial invasions; voyages into the past and the future, to the center of the Earth and to the outer edge of infinity; fear of the end of the world; nuclear catastrophes; new societies of the future and ancient civilizations that have survived; the errors and horrors of science; virtual reality and, in the midst all this, the usual protagonists. Classic themes and typical characters at the center of the colorful world of science fiction, which has always been one of the most spectacular genres, with a virtually unsurpassable number of fans.
A large exhibition, created and organized by the National Cinema Museum, for the first time presents a vast collection of unique and rare objects: 300 posters, inserts and playbills from the Museum’s rich collection recreate a thought-provoking visual gallery which chronologically illustrates the history of science fiction in film, from the early 1900s to today.
The exhibit begins with silent films, with Voyage autour d’une étoile from 1906, one of the earliest films from the dawn of science fiction by Georges Méliès, the science fiction father of phantasmagorias. It then moves on to cult movies like King Kong, Frankenstein, The War of the Worlds, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, The Blob, 2001: A Space Odyssey, ET, Robocop, and Star Wars) and completes the journey with the most recent works such as Independence Day, Matrix and The Day After Tomorrow.
Not only are there posters but toys and props as well. As an additional tribute to such a beloved genre, in the Temple Hall the Museum has set up a display of a wide selection of toys and models from Star Wars (from a major private collection owned by Fabrizio Modina).
